(Yahoo!) - Angelina Jolie's brave medical journey is far from over.
The humanitarian and mother of six revealed on Monday night that she recently had a preventive double mastectomy after finding out she carried the BRCA1 gene. Due to this mutated gene, Jolie learned there was an 87% chance that she would get breast cancer and a 50% chance she'd develop ovarian cancer.
Now, People magazine reports that Jolie, 37, will undergo surgery to remove her ovaries. Some doctors recommend patients do this before the age of 40 or when a woman is done having children, though it may trigger early menopause.
Jolie's mother Marcheline Bertrand, with whom the actress was extremely close, passed away at the age of 56 after losing her seven-year battle with ovarian cancer.
"She is doing well," a source tells People about how the Oscar winning actress is coping through this challenging time. Jolie had the double mastectomy in February and reconstructive surgery in April.
However, insiders tell People that life has been "normal" for her and Brad Pitt's children. The couple kept up family traditions such as a Valentine's Day gift exchange and an Easter egg hunt even though Jolie was undergoing treatment.
"Her kids always come first to her," a family insider says in People magazine's cover story.

"American Idol" is going through some major changes lately. It was just announced that Randy Jackson is leaving the talent competition show after 12 seasons, sparking rumors that the rest of the judges panel would soon get the boot. Now, Us Weekly is reporting that Nicki Minaj has made the decision to leave "American Idol" as well.
An insider tells Us Weekly, "It's safe to say she isn't coming back to Idol," adding that the "Roman Holiday" rapper will instead focus on her next album, and touring, among other ventures. The insider says, "She's okay with it. She had a great time but was only going to do one season anyway."
The remaining judges, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban, haven't said anything about their future on the show yet.
Will you miss Nicki?
